About Chris
Hello everyone at St John's
I wanted to write a few lines to say hello to you all and introduce myself. My name is Chris (Christopher) Hanning – I’m really looking forward to meeting you all inperson and beginning life together with you at St John’s!
Originally from Newbury in Berkshire, I came to London in 2006 and have lived here ever since – I love London’s incredible diversity and how Jesus Christ is good news for us all. I turned to Christ as Saviour and Lord while at university, having grown up in a Christian family. For several years I worked in healthcare publishing. Then I started full-time Christian ministry, first as a trainee, then later studying at Oak Hill College, before becoming ordained as a minister in 2018 – that’s when I moved to Southwark Diocese to be Curate at St John’s Blackheath.
I am married to my wonderful wife Charis – she is originally from Hong Kong and Canada, and now counts London as her home too. We love foods and traditions from different cultures, exploring the countryside when we can, making new friends, and all sorts of music (playing and listening). I still love our names’ similar spelling! She can’t wait to meet you, too.
I want to thank you all so much for praying to God during the discernment process. It can feel like a long wait, and the pandemic has anyway been such a difficult time for us all. Thank you especially to Daniel, Busola, the PCC, and everyone who contributed to the parish profile and in other ways. Like you, I have been praying and praying, seeking God’s will and Christ’s call. And now I’m excited to take this step with you. May we all know God strengthening us by his grace as we begin 2022 and look forward to new beginnings together.
Warmly in Christ,
Chris
