Passion Sequence

Sunday 6 April 2025, 10:30 - 11:30

Welcome to our Passion Sequence, a service to introduce the themes of Holy Week and Easter. The service takes us through the themes of River, Sea and Beyond using sacred music from the Psalms. We follow the river where it leads us, we are plunged into the abyss of the ocean, and we end up in the eternal mystery of what lies beyond.

Children are welcome at this service, and please don’t worry if they make a little noise.

Ensemble Tramontana specialises in the music of medieval and Renaissance Europe. We use viols, recorders, harps, vielles, percussion, and voices to evoke the spirit of those times - on this occasion, voices and different sizes of the viol (viola da gamba). 'Tramontana' is the name of a northern wind that sweeps across Europe: the word itself means 'across the mountains' and was used to refer to the northern direction, but also to anything or anyone strange or foreign. From as early as the late 13th century, it was also an alternative name for the Pole Star, a pivotal navigation aid of the times.

Like the tramontana wind, the music Ensemble Tramontana performs has travelled across Europe, stirring emotions. Our programmes generally create a journey or tell a story – and after all, a story is also a journey.
